FAQ

General HVAC Questions

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

We recommend having your heating and cooling system professionally serviced twice a year, once in the spring before cooling season, and once in the fall before heating season. Regular maintenance helps catch small problems before they become expensive repairs, extends the life of your equipment, and keeps your system running at peak efficiency. Triad's Maintenance Plan members enjoy scheduled tune-ups, priority service, and savings on repairs.

How long does an HVAC system last?

Most well-maintained systems last 15–20 years. Air conditioners typically last 15–18 years, furnaces 18–20 years, and heat pumps 15–17 years. Systems in North Carolina that run heavily through hot summers may trend toward the lower end of those ranges. If your system is over 12 years old and needing frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace it than continue repairing it.

What brands of HVAC equipment does Triad Heating & Cooling install?

We are proud dealers of American Standard equipment and also service all major makes and models. We'll always recommend the right system for your home's size, layout, and budget  not just the most expensive option.

Does Triad Heating & Cooling offer financing?

Yes. We offer financing options to help you manage the cost of a new system or major repair. We know HVAC work is a significant investment, and we want to make comfort accessible to every homeowner in the Triad area. Contact us or visit our financing page to learn more and apply.

Air Conditioning Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling my house?

There are several common causes: a dirty air filter restricting airflow, low refrigerant levels, a frozen evaporator coil, a failing compressor, or a thermostat issue. Some of these are simple fixes, others require a professional diagnosis. If your AC is running constantly but your home isn't reaching the set temperature, call us for a service visit before the problem worsens.

How do I know if my air conditioner needs to be replaced or just repaired?

A good rule of thumb is the "$5,000 rule”, multiply the age of the system by the cost of the repair. If that number exceeds $5,000, replacement is usually the smarter investment. Other signs it's time to replace: your system is over 15 years old, it uses R-22 refrigerant (no longer manufactured), repairs have become frequent, or your energy bills keep climbing. Our technicians will give you an honest recommendation.

How much does a new air conditioner cost in North Carolina?

The cost varies based on the size of your home, the type of system, and the complexity of the installation. A standard central AC replacement in the Triad area typically ranges from $4,000 to $10,000 installed. We offer free estimates so you know exactly what to expect with no surprises.

What size air conditioner do I need for my home?

AC size is measured in tons and is determined by your home's square footage, insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, and local climate, not a simple formula. An undersized unit won't cool effectively; an oversized one will cycle on and off too frequently and leave your home feeling humid. Our team performs a proper load calculation to match the right equipment to your home.

What is a ductless mini-split system and is it right for my home?

A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that doesn't require ductwork. It's ideal for home additions, older homes without existing duct systems, sunrooms, garages, or any space that's difficult to condition with a traditional system. They're highly efficient and offer individual zone control. Triad installs and services ductless systems throughout our service area.

Heating & Furnace Questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Common causes include a tripped limit switch (usually from overheating), a dirty filter blocking airflow, a malfunctioning pilot light or ignitor, or a heat exchanger issue. If your furnace is running but your home isn't warming up, it's worth a call to our team. Some of these issues can be safety concerns if left unaddressed.

How do I know if my heat exchanger is cracked?

A cracked heat exchanger is a serious issue, it can allow carbon monoxide to enter your home's air supply. Warning signs include unusual smells when the furnace runs, soot buildup around the furnace, frequent headaches or dizziness in the home, or the furnace cycling on and off repeatedly. If you suspect a cracked heat exchanger, turn off the system and call us immediately.

What is a heat pump and how does it differ from a furnace?

A heat pump both heats and cools your home by moving heat rather than generating it. In winter, it extracts heat from outdoor air and moves it inside; in summer, it reverses and works like an air conditioner. Heat pumps are very efficient in mild-to-moderate climates like North Carolina. Furnaces generate heat by burning fuel or using electric resistance and are often paired with a heat pump for the coldest days (a "dual-fuel" system).

Is a gas furnace or heat pump better for homes in Greensboro and Asheboro, NC?

Both are excellent options in our area. North Carolina's climate is generally mild enough for a heat pump to handle heating efficiently most of the year. However, homes with natural gas access often benefit from a dual-fuel system, a heat pump for most of the year and a gas furnace as backup on the coldest days. Our team can help you weigh the costs and benefits for your specific home.

Indoor Air Quality & Duct Cleaning

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

The EPA suggests having your ductwork inspected and cleaned every 3–5 years, or sooner if you've had recent construction or renovation, notice visible mold or dust buildup at vents, have pets that shed heavily, or have family members with allergies or respiratory conditions. Because your ducts are hidden, they tend to get overlooked but they play a major role in your home's comfort and air quality.

Can dirty ducts affect my health?

Yes. Dust, pet dander, mold spores, and other contaminants can accumulate in your ductwork over time and circulate through your home every time your system runs. For households with allergy sufferers, asthma, or young children, professional duct cleaning can make a meaningful difference in the quality of the air you breathe indoors.

What is indoor air quality (IAQ) and what can I do to improve it?

Indoor air quality refers to how clean, fresh, and healthy the air inside your home is. Common issues include excess humidity, airborne allergens, dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and inadequate ventilation. Triad offers a range of IAQ solutions including whole-home air purifiers, Aprilaire filtration systems, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, and UV air treatment systems.

Do I need a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier?

North Carolina summers bring high humidity that can make your home feel warmer than it is, encourage mold growth, and damage wood floors and furniture. Winters bring dry air that can irritate skin and respiratory systems. A whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier integrated directly with your HVAC system gives you precise, automatic control over humidity levels year-round, which a portable unit simply can't match.

Other Services

Does Triad install whole-home generators?

Yes. We install whole-home standby generators that keep your HVAC system and the rest of your home running during a power outage. This is especially valuable for homeowners with medical equipment, young children, or elderly family members who depend on consistent heating and cooling.

What is crawlspace encapsulation and why does it matter for my HVAC system?

Crawlspace encapsulation seals your crawlspace from moisture, pests, and outside air. Unencapsulated crawlspaces are a major source of humidity, mold, and energy loss in North Carolina homes, all of which put extra strain on your HVAC system. A properly encapsulated crawlspace helps your system run more efficiently and protects your home's structure and air quality.

Can Triad help with smart thermostat and home automation installation?

Absolutely. We offer home automation solutions including smart thermostats that allow you to control your comfort from anywhere. A programmable or smart thermostat can reduce energy costs by automatically adjusting temperatures based on your schedule and our team can recommend and install the right option for your system.
